A Life in Music

Born in Tokyo, Japan, Shion began her journey with the flute at the age of ten. She studied under the celebrated flautist Kaoru Kitamura and immersed herself in chamber music with many distinguished musicians at Toho Gakuen School of Music, graduating with her Bachelor's degree in 2009.

As a student she toured with the Toho Gakuen Orchestra to Kyoto, Nagoya and Tokyo, performing the solo flute part in Debussy's luminous Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. In 2007 she received the Panel's Award at a concert held by the Tokyo International Artist Association, and was subsequently selected to perform at the Yamaha Newcomer Concert and to give a Flute Debut Recital sponsored by the Japan Flutist Association.

Shion moved to Sydney, Australia, where she completed her Master's degree in music performance at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music under flautist Alexa Stil. She deepened her artistry through masterclasses with Michel Belavance, George Pope, Felix Rengli, Vincence Platz, Andreas Brau and Paul Meisen.

In Sydney she has performed in Bach Cantatas at All Souls Anglican Church in Leichhardt, given two solo performances at the Sydney Opera House, and appeared as soloist with the Sydney Concert Orchestra performing Monti's Czardas at Sydney Town Hall. She is currently based in Sydney and welcomes both performance engagements and private students.

Alongside performance, Shion teaches flute to students of all ages with a focus on confidence, curiosity, and collaborative music-making. Drawing from her deep experience in chamber music, she encourages students to develop strong listening skills, musical independence, and expressive playing alongside solid technical foundations.

During school holidays, she also runs intensive workshop days designed to immerse students in ensemble playing, musicianship, and focused musical development in a supportive and engaging environment.

Outside of music, Shion is a mother of two young children, and it is perhaps this that has deepened her belief in the importance of warmth, patience, and genuine connection during the lessons. She has a great love of all things delicious — a good coffee, freshly baked bread, and food of every kind — and finds that the same curiosity and joy she brings to the table she brings to every lesson. Above all, she is simply someone who loves music deeply and believes in what it does to people — the flute will always hold a special place in her heart, but it is the way music moves, connects, and transforms that keeps her inspired every single day.
